Screenshot: Helsinki, the inaugural manifestation of Screenshot, will be presented at Forum Box in Helsinki, and investigates the screen as a physical object and as a metaphor. A screen is both a mirror and a window – providing space for reflection and (dis)engagement into an ephemera of circulating content. Moreover, the program examines the concept of a screen as a landscape where different modes of being and channels of communication coexist. Users editing their newsfeeds or corporations keeping track of our daily tasks takes place both in front of the screen and within the structures that are mediated by the screen and asks us to transcend the given infrastructure and act as subversive participants instead of passive observers. The works in Screenshot: Helsinki point out to various trajectories within these dynamic structures.
Artists in Screenshot: Helsinki,: Jennifer Chan, Keren Cytter, Oliver Laric, Lindsay Lawson, Jaakko Pallasvuo, Hayley Silverman, Ryan Trecartin
Screenshot commissioned Jennifer Chan to develop a screencast – a reimagining of the form of an artist’s talk – for Screenshot: Helsinki. Chan’s screencast will be presented at the end of the screening program, and further takes on the medium will be presented alongside subsequent screenings.
Screenshot is a curatorial project initiated by Anna Mikkola and Michael Ruiz dedicated to researching moving image artworks. It presents works by artists fluent in prevailing everyday technological tools, which they use to conceptually approach and pose critical questions about our increasingly screen-based reality. Their works engage with the concepts of ambiguous authorship, mediated realities, the physicality of information, and the evolution of data, which we believe to be indicative of a present moment in the cultural landscape.

Screenshot on videotaidetta esittelevä kuratoriaalinen projekti. Se tuo esiin teoksia taiteilijoilta, joille vallitsevat, jokapäiväiset teknologiset työkalut ovat luonteva osa taiteellista toimintaa, ja joita he käyttävät konseptuaalisesti sekä kriittisesti käsitelläkseen alati lisääntyvää, erilaisten näyttöpäätteiden välittämää todellisuuttamme.
Screenshot -projektin ensimmäiseen, Forum Box -galleriassa esitettävään, Screenshot: Helsinki -näytökseen kuratoidut teokset tutkivat näyttöruutua sekä fyysisenä objektina että metaforana. Näyttöruutua käsitellään teoksissa myös maisemana, jossa olemisen eri tasot sekä vaihtelevat viestinnän muodot elävät rinnakkain.
