Rank Ensemble is a Helsinki-based ensemble focusing on new and improvised music. Rank Ensemble is: Elena Kakaliagou (Greece/Austria), french horn; Saara Rautio (Finland), harp; Solmund Nystabakk (Norway), guitar; and James Andean (Canada), piano, electronics and objects.

Andrew Bentley: Z to S

'Z to S' reflects a process of making the instruments speak, by
finding relationships between ?voiced? and ?unvoiced? sounds? In
essence, the work is about finding poetry inside sounds and making
sounds function like poetry.

Andrew Bentley (b. 1952, Fleetwood, UK) is a composer, sound artist,
performance artist and teacher. He has taught electroacoustic music
and music technology for 35 years at universities in Finland and
England, and is currently teacher at the Centre for Music & Technology
of the Sibelius Academy. He performs electroacoustic music with many
well known Finnish musicians, and electroacoustic performance art as a
duo called Son Panic with Juhani Liimatainen.

Rank Ensemble is a Helsinki-based quartet devoted to new music and
free improvisation. With a unique line-up of guitar, harp, french
horn, piano and electronics, their activities focus on improvisation
on the one hand, as well as works from the contemporary music
repertoire which include elements of improvisation, or otherwise
expanded roles for the performers.
